I'll start with busting out some of the most common myths among fitness enthusiasts.
Myth 1: If I do crunches,I'll get abs.
This is one of the most popular misconceptions among people.You can't simply spot reduce fats from a particular region of your body.So,all those sets of crunches are useless unless you have a bodyfat somewhere around 12%.
The fats around our mid-section is a little different from fats all over the body.The belly fat is the moststubborn kind of fat you'll ever come across.Its the last few pounds of fats which leaves your body at the very end.
So,any attempt to shrink your midsection while you are considerably heavy can backfire in following ways:
1.Working out abs with a bodyfat above 20% will develop your abs from the outside and you'll have a bulged out appearence.
2.You will not see any results and eventually,you stop working out.
Let me show you an easy way how to plan your weight loss:
1 pound of fat=3500 calories
For ex: A person wants to lose 10 pounds in a month
He/she should either burn 35000 more calories than he consumes or by creating a deficit of 35000 calories over a period of one month.
Myth 2: Doing 30-40mins cardio/day will help me get shredded.
NEVER in this lifetime at least!
Your body,unlike other machine has its own understanding and it stops responding and growing once it detects a fixed patterns in your workout.In order to keep burning fats,we need to keep shocking our body,never letting it adjust to a fixed regime.
This can be done by a few modifications:
Increase in VO2 max- Its the amount of oxygen that is used by the body during a cardiovascular activity.Increase in VO2 max will burn more calories while you are resting.The best way to increase the VO2 max is by incorporating HIIT.
Myth 3: working out my obliques through exercise like dumbbell side bends will shrink my waist.
You are actually making your waist bigger.Upward and downward motion which puts stress on the obliques develops the
muscles on your sides thus making your waist look even broader and ugly.
If looked properly,the anatomy of the obliques requires it to be trained in a horizontal sideways direction only.
So,side bends should be avoided as soon as possible.
